School beyond stratification: Internal goods, alienation, and an expanded sociology of education

Abstract Sociologists of education often emphasize goods that result from a practice (external goods) rather than intrinsic to (internal goods). The authors draw John Dewey and Alasdair MacIntyre describe how the same can be understood as producing “skills” center external or habits (Dewey) virtues (MacIntyre), both which internal goods. situate these concepts within sociology education’s stratification paradigm renewed interest in concept alienation, contrasting skills, habits, capital, credentials, habitus. They close by connecting argument broader critiques procedural liberalism ideology meritocracy, then giving suggestions for an expanded beyond paradigm.
